Vikings Retain Greenard Amid Trade Rumors

Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell expects linebacker Jonathan Greenard to remain on the roster this season, despite trade rumors that circulated after ESPN reported Minnesota was open to dealing the pass rusher. The Vikings trimmed nearly $50 million from their cap total but Greenard's $19 million salary sits below the league's top pass rushers, making a trade possible if the right offer emerges.

Greenard recorded 12.5 sacks and earned Pro Bowl honors in 2024 before a shoulder injury slowed him last season. Despite managing only three sacks in 12 games, his 13.5% pressure rate ranked seventh in the NFL. The Vikings envision Greenard pairing with veteran Andrew Van Ginkel and 2024 first-rounder Dallas Turner in their linebacker rotation.

The Vikings also await a decision from safety Harrison Smith on retirement, while quarterback J.J. McCarthy has returned to Minnesota after offseason training in California. O'Connell noted McCarthy has gained perspective during this period. Meanwhile, Blake Brandel appears set to become the permanent starter at center following Ryan Kelly's retirement.
