Supreme Court lets NFL discrimination suit proceed

The Supreme Court declined to intervene in former Miami Dolphins coach Brian Flores' discrimination lawsuit against the NFL, allowing the case to proceed toward trial. Justices rebuffed the league's attempt to move the case to arbitration, with Justice Brett Kavanaugh dissenting. Flores, who is Black, originally sued the league and three teams in 2022 alleging racial bias in hiring practices.

Flores, now Vikings defensive coordinator, was joined in the lawsuit by fellow Black coaches Steve Wilks and Ray Horton. The Dolphins fired Flores after he posted a 24-25 record without playoff appearances. The NFL argued the case should go through arbitration, but lower courts sided with the plaintiffs. Three teams named in the suit are the Broncos, Giants, and Texans.

The league said it respects the decision but is "fully prepared to defend ourselves as this matter proceeds." Plaintiffs' attorneys expressed satisfaction, noting the NFL cannot use its commissioner as an arbitrator for discrimination claims. This legal battle will now proceed in open court in New York, potentially exposing NFL hiring practices to public scrutiny.
