Flores Expands Legal Battle, Targets 25 NFL Teams

Kris Rhim reports that Brian Flores' lawyers have issued subpoenas to 25 teams and sent more than 1,000 discovery requests in a bid to unearth leaguewide hiring data linked to alleged discrimination. The move follows Flores' lawsuit against the NFL, which accuses the league of systemic bias in hiring Black coaches.

Judge Valerie E. Caproni has set a briefing schedule that forces Flores to file a third amended complaint on May 20, motions to dismiss on June 5, and briefs in late July and August. The court’s timetable will decide whether the claims survive and could expose the NFL’s hiring practices leaguewide.

Flores, former Miami Dolphins head coach and current Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator, claims that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross offered him $100,000 per loss in 2019 to influence draft picks and that the Giants and Broncos staged sham interviews to meet the Rooney Rule. His allegations also name Texans, Giants and Broncos in retaliation and hiring denial.

The case, now before the Supreme Court, could force the NFL to disclose its hiring records and alter how teams evaluate candidates. If the court upholds Flores’ claims, the league may face a wave of lawsuits and a mandatory overhaul of its diversity policies.
