Goodell Defends Rooney Rule as NFL Faces Legal Challenge Over Diversity Hiring

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell reaffirmed the league's commitment to the Rooney Rule during a press conference, explicitly rejecting calls to eliminate the diversity initiative despite a legal challenge from Florida's attorney general. Goodell stated the rule, established in 2003 to increase minority representation in hiring, is consistent with evolving state laws and has proven beneficial across industries. The rule requires teams to interview minority candidates for head coaching, GM, coordinator, and QB coach positions.

A 2020 modification grants teams a compensatory third-round draft pick if a minority GM or head coach is hired elsewhere. However, the rule has yielded only one minority head coach hire this offseason - Robert Saleh of the New York Jets - despite 10 openings. Florida AG James Uthmeier threatened litigation, arguing the rule violates state law prohibiting race-based hiring decisions.

Goodell countered that the rule isn't a hiring mandate but a tool to identify qualified candidates, citing its use beyond football. The league will engage with Uthmeier while preparing for the season, including contingency plans for officials and stadium negotiations for the Chicago Bears.
