NFL Blocks Brendan Sorsby's Attempt to Skip NCAA Ban

The NFL will not hold a supplemental draft this year, blocking Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby from jumping to the pros. This decision prevents Sorsby from bypassing a permanent NCAA ban. The league's move forces him to wait until the 2027 draft to enter the professional ranks.

Sorsby admitted to placing roughly 9,000 bets over four years while playing for Indiana, Cincinnati, and Texas Tech. This included 40 bets on his own team. Despite a brief legal victory in Lubbock County that almost let him play the 2026 season, the league is refusing to provide an easy off-ramp.

Attorney Jeffrey Kessler claims this denial violates the law and the collective bargaining agreement. However, the NFL maintains that Sorsby failed to show accountability for his actions. By denying the petition, the league protects competitive integrity despite its own business ties to sportsbooks and betting data providers.

This ruling sends a clear message to all college athletes regarding wagering. The NFL refuses to accept a short-term treatment session as a substitute for genuine responsibility. Sorsby remains ineligible for professional play until the 2027 draft cycle.
