Mahomes Returns to Chiefs Practice in OTA Comeback from Knee Injury

Patrick Mahomes participated in the Kansas City Chiefs' first OTA practice on Tuesday, marking his return to the field since suffering a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee last December. The quarterback took part in drills during the closed session, throwing passes to teammates as he continues rehabilitation from the Dec. 15 surgery.

Mahomes sustained the significant injury late in a Dec. 14 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, forcing him to miss the remainder of the 2024 season. He has worked extensively with Julie Frymyer, the team's athletic trainer, throughout his recovery process. The only previous footage of Mahomes throwing came from a brief Instagram clip in late March, showing a five-step dropback at moderate tempo.

The Chiefs' first open practice occurs Thursday, giving reporters their initial look at Mahomes' progress. Coach Andy Reid noted that Phase 2 of the offseason program lacks contact and full offense-versus-defense work, with Phase 3 bringing more intensive action. Even limited participation represents positive momentum for the quarterback's recovery timeline.

Mahomes has targeted Sept. 14 against the Denver Broncos for his potential return, a Monday Night Football home opener that would cap his comeback. The team has grown increasingly optimistic about his availability for that season-opening matchup, though his workload will likely remain managed throughout the summer.
