The Detroit Lions are finalizing a deal to hire former Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing as their new OC, sources told ESPN. Petzing, 38, will replace John Morton, who was fired after one season. The move comes after the Lions finished 9-8 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2022.

Petzing spent the past three seasons calling plays under Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon. His hiring signals a shift for Detroit, which struggled offensively in 2025 despite having Pro Bowl talents like Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jahmyr Gibbs. The team scored 28.3 points per game but lacked the consistency of the previous year's league-leading unit.

Head coach Dan Campbell is expected to relinquish playcalling duties to Petzing, lightening his own load. General manager Brad Holmes prioritized leadership and detail orientation during the search. Petzing’s challenge is to restore the offensive identity that vanished after Ben Johnson’s departure to the Chicago Bears.
