No one should be surprised that Kyler Murray won the Minnesota Vikings' quarterback competition. Murray demonstrated this spring that he had recovered from a foot injury, making his talent a formidable obstacle for incumbent J.J. McCarthy. Coach Kevin O'Connell made the call Tuesday, prioritizing the best player without regard to finances or draft status. Murray is paid the veteran's minimum of $1.3 million, while McCarthy is in his third year.

Murray had intriguing days showing rhythm and downfield throws, but struggled in the three practices before the decision, throwing two interceptions. O'Connell acknowledged the plan was always to decide after 9-10 practices. While Murray hasn't had an eye-opening camp, the Vikings are adjusting their offense to benefit him, using more shotgun and pistol.

For McCarthy, the news is bad. He finished 2025 on an upswing with a 69.8 QBR after Week 13, but his improvement was incremental. He'll enter his third NFL season as a backup, and there's little precedent for a top-10 pick regaining a starting job after being replaced. O'Connell believes McCarthy has a future, but the next opportunity might only come if Murray is injured. A trade can't be ruled out.

Murray will be the Vikings' fourth different Week 1 starter in four seasons. For wide receiver Justin Jefferson, Murray gives a better chance to elevate production. But a contract clause prohibits the Vikings from using the franchise tag on Murray in 2027, making this potentially a short-term arrangement.
