Vikings QB Battle: Murray Favored Over McCarthy

The Minnesota Vikings have split snaps between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy in the first seven practices, but observers see Murray as the heavy favorite.

Across roughly 300 snaps in 7‑on‑7 and 11‑on‑11 drills, Murray has received about two‑thirds of the first‑team offense plays, a pattern that suggests the Vikings are leaning toward him. His ability to make deep throws to Justin Jefferson and other receivers shows he’s mastering the new system.

McCarthy, meanwhile, has spent much of his time on the second offense against the first defense, focusing on short‑range, bootleg passes. His accuracy remains inconsistent and he has yet to match the ground Murray has covered.

Coach Kevin O’Connell praised both quarterbacks but noted Murray’s daily improvement and his hard work in OTAs. With the GM position already vacated, there’s little institutional bias for McCarthy, keeping the QB1 battle firmly in Murray’s favor.
