Murray's early struggles spotlight Vikings QB battle

Kyler Murray entered the Vikings’ mandatory minicamp as the clear favorite to win the quarterback battle, but seven practices have not been flawless. On Tuesday he showed sharpness before throwing two consecutive interceptions during 7‑on‑7 drills, both taken by opposing defenders and highlighting timing lapses as he adapts to new teammates and a different offensive scheme.

Murray said the toughest aspect of leaving Arizona is sharing limited reps with J.J. McCarthy and the other Vikings quarterbacks. After seven years of full‑time reps, he now “gets behind” in mastering the playbook, forcing him to “embrace the uncomfortable.” The first interception resulted from a misread with tight end Gavin Bartholomew; the second fell past Jauan Jennings and was snatched by Byron Murphy Jr.

McCarthy matched Murray’s snap count throughout the open OTA portions, fueling speculation he might seek a trade if he fails to secure the start. He countered that he loves the organization, coaching staff and system, reaffirming his desire to thrive in Minnesota. With both quarterbacks receiving comparable reps, the competition remains open but Murray retains the edge as the preseason progresses.
