The Washington Commanders are re-signing backup quarterback Marcus Mariota to a one-year, $7 million deal with up to $11 million in incentives, according to NFL Network. The 32-year-old veteran started eight games last season for Washington, throwing for 1,695 yards, 10 touchdowns, and seven interceptions while starter Jayden Daniels battled injuries.

Mariota stepped in for Daniels three times in 2024, including two victories where he threw for 366 yards and four touchdowns. His most memorable moment came in the regular season finale against Dallas, completing a five-yard pass with two seconds left to secure the win. The former Tennessee Titan has developed a strong mentor relationship with Daniels, who like Mariota won the Heisman Trophy and was drafted second overall.

Mariota brings extensive experience to Washington's quarterback room, having started 82 career games and thrown for 17,879 yards with 107 touchdowns and 62 interceptions. The Commanders clearly value his veteran presence and ability to step in when needed, especially given Daniels' injury history. This move provides Washington with insurance at the most important position on the field.
