Cleveland Browns defensive end Alex Wright suffered a ruptured Achilles during Thursday's joint practice with the Buffalo Bills and was placed on season-ending injured reserve. The team immediately signed veteran pass rusher Derek Barnett to a one-year deal worth up to $5.5 million. Wright, 25, recorded a career-high 5.5 sacks last season after signing a three-year, $33 million extension in November.

The injury occurred while Wright attempted a pass rush against Bills offensive tackle Spencer Brown in a one-on-one drill. With Wright sidelined, Isaiah Mc Guire is expected to start opposite Jared Verse. Barnett, 30, played with the Houston Texans last season, recording five sacks.

Cleveland hosted Jadeveon Clowney and Za'Darius Smith on visits but missed out on both. In a preseason loss to the Bills, third-year defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr. started at defensive end and recorded a sack. Barnett, a 2017 first-round pick by the Eagles, won a Super Bowl in his rookie year and tallied 21.5 sacks over seven seasons with Philadelphia.
