Chargers Cut Mekhi Becton to Save $9.7M Cap Space

The Los Angeles Chargers plan to release offensive guard Mekhi Becton in a cost-cutting move that will save the team $9.7 million against the salary cap, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. The decision comes after Becton struggled in his first season with the Chargers following a two-year, $20 million contract signed last March.

Becton, 26, battled injuries throughout the 2025 season and finished ranked as the 49th-worst guard in pass block win rate at 91.2%. He played just 72% of snaps and only appeared in 15 games with 14 starts. The move was expedited by roster bonuses totaling $3.5 million due this month, forcing general manager Joe Hortiz to make a quick decision.

The release reflects both performance issues and a philosophical shift in offensive scheme. Under new coordinator Mike McDaniel, the Chargers are transitioning to a faster, outside-zone running scheme that favors quick and agile linemen rather than the gap-scheme offense that suited Becton's massive 6-foot-7, 363-pound frame. The team now faces rebuilding its interior offensive line while also replacing retired center Bradley Bozeman.
