Former New York Jets quarterback Browning Nagle, who starred in Louisville's dramatic 1991 Fiesta Bowl upset of Alabama, died this week after battling colon cancer. He was 57. Nagle threw for 451 yards and three touchdowns in that iconic performance, earning MVP honors. The Jets selected him in the second round of the 1991 NFL draft, hoping he'd become their franchise quarterback after his collegiate success.

Nagle's NFL career struggled to match his college promise. He went 3-10 as the Jets' starting quarterback in 1992, throwing 17 interceptions to just seven touchdown passes. The Jets had actually tried to trade up for Brett Favre in the 1991 draft, but Favre went one spot ahead to the Falcons. After his NFL release, Nagle found success in the Arena League, throwing 74 touchdowns over two seasons.

Nagle transitioned to medical sales after his playing days, leaving behind a legacy as one of Louisville's most memorable quarterbacks. "We are saddened by the passing of Browning Nagle, former Fiesta Bowl MVP quarterback and Louisville great," the school posted on X. Born in Philadelphia and raised in Tampa, Nagle's football journey took him from West Virginia to Louisville before his professional career concluded.
