NBA probes Leonard-Aspiration cap‑circumvention case

LA Clippers star Kawhi Leonard and his uncle‑business adviser Dennis Robertson sat for NBA investigators as the league probes alleged salary‑cap circumvention tied to a sponsorship with now‑defunct Aspiration, sources say. Clippers owner Steve Ballmer and other executives also gave statements, while Aspiration officials were questioned. The team publicly denies any wrongdoing.

The controversy stems from a September 2021 investment where Ballmer’s personal LLC pumped $300 million into Aspiration, making the firm the Intuit Dome’s founding partner. Six months later Aspiration signed a $28 million endorsement with Leonard, which a former employee claimed was designed to skirt the cap. Leonard’s camp insists the deal mirrored his other sponsorships and contained no cap‑related language.

Commissioner Adam Silver told reporters the probe is “far along” and close to a conclusion, emphasizing that any discipline must rest on solid evidence, not perception. Penalties under the 2023 CBA can reach $7.5 million, draft‑pick forfeiture, or personnel suspension. The league will present findings to owners before deciding on any sanction.

Regardless of the verdict, the case will set a benchmark for how the NBA regulates player endorsements that intersect with team partnerships, potentially reshaping future sponsor arrangements across the league. The ruling could also prompt the NBPA to renegotiate collective bargaining provisions, ensuring players retain endorsement freedom while protecting clubs from indirect cap violations.
