Morant Embraces Fresh Start with Blazers

Ja Morant framed his June trade to the Portland Trail Blazers as a chance to reset both his reputation and his career. Speaking at Las Vegas summer league, the 26-year-old guard said he wants to clear up the "bad guy" image that followed two gun-related suspensions in Memphis — an eight-game ban in March 2023 and a 25-game suspension to open the 2023-24 season — plus a one-game team suspension for a confrontation with coach Tuomas Iisalo. "If I was that guy, y'all wouldn't be talking to me now," Morant said. "I've grown a lot and learned a lot. My mindset changed."

The Memphis Grizzlies sent Morant to Portland for forwards Jerami Grant and Kris Murray, dismantling a core that reached the playoffs four times in seven years. Morant averaged 19.5 points and 8.1 assists last season but appeared in just 20 games due to injuries. He insists his body feels great after four months of conditioning work amid trade rumors.

Portland now fields a crowded backcourt featuring Damian Lillard, Jrue Holiday, Deni Avdija, Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe. Morant said he's willing to start or come off the bench, calling the group "very unselfish." The Blazers bet that a healthy Morant unlocks new offensive dimensions alongside Lillard's shooting and Holiday's defense.

For Memphis, the Morant trade completes a teardown that also moved Jaren Jackson Jr. and Desmond Bane while Dillon Brooks left in free agency. Portland gains a playmaker who can collapse defenses, but the fit hinges on health and role acceptance. If Morant stays on the floor, the Blazers become a dangerous West wildcard; if not, they've mortgaged frontcourt depth for a question mark.
