Ja Morant Traded to Portland in Major NBA Deal

Ja Morant is headed to Portland after the Trail Blazers and Memphis Grizzlies completed a trade on Monday. The move gives the two-time All-Star an opportunity to revive his career after a tumultuous period in Memphis. Morant averaged 22.4 points per game but has appeared in only 79 contests over the past three seasons due to injuries and suspensions.

The 26-year-old's off-court issues have dominated headlines, including a 25-game ban after he was seen holding a gun during a livestream and an eight-game suspension for flashing a weapon at a Denver nightclub. These suspensions cost him approximately $9m in lost salary. Despite the controversy, Morant showed tremendous potential after being drafted No. 2 overall in 2019, winning Rookie of the Year in 2020 and Most Improved Player in 2021-22.

Portland sends Jerami Grant and Kris Murray to Memphis in the deal. Grant averaged 18.6 points last season, while Murray contributed 5.8 points per game. The Trail Blazers now face a crowded point guard position with Jrue Holiday, Damian Lillard, Scoot Henderson, and Morant all competing for minutes.

This trade represents a significant gamble for Portland's new ownership group led by Tom Dundon. For Memphis, it signals the end of their young core that once included Morant, Dillon Brooks, Jaren Jackson Jr., and Desmond Bane - all players who have departed within two years of their 56-win season.
