Mavericks eye arena move from downtown

The Dallas Mavericks have a preliminary agreement on a 104-acre site for a new arena that would move the franchise out of downtown for the first time since 2031. CEO Rick Welts aims to finalize the location by July 2026, before the current lease at American Airlines Center expires. The team wants a basketball-only arena after sharing with the NHL's Dallas Stars, who are also considering relocation options.

Mavericks also considered a downtown site at the current City Hall location, where Dallas officials debate renovating or replacing the building. The team has been clear for nearly two years they wanted to stay in Dallas while building a dedicated basketball venue. A legal dispute with the Stars complicates arena relocation plans for both franchises currently co-tenants at American Airlines Center.

Welts, who orchestrated the Warriors' move from Oakland to San Francisco's Chase Center, was brought out of retirement specifically for this project. The team envisions a "vibrant mixed-use destination" with economic benefits for Dallas. The move would end the Mavericks' 35-year history playing in downtown venues since leaving Reunion Arena in 2001.
