Cuban Regrets Mavs Sale to Adelson, Dumont Families

Mark Cuban has publicly expressed regret over selling the Dallas Mavericks to the Adelson and Dumont families, saying he regrets who he sold to rather than the sale itself. In a recent podcast appearance, Cuban admitted making mistakes in the process while maintaining his 27% stake in the franchise. The $3.5 billion valuation deal closed in December 2023, with Cuban initially claiming control of basketball operations would continue unchanged.

Cuban's relationship with the new ownership has deteriorated significantly since the sale. He was blindsided by the Luka Doncic trade to the Los Angeles Lakers in February 2025, which he learned about only after it was finalized. The former Mavericks owner lobbied behind the scenes for then-general manager Nico Harrison's firing in November 2025 after a poor start to the season. Despite landing Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 pick in the draft lottery, the Mavs have struggled to a 24-51 record, the sixth-worst in the NBA.

Sources indicate Cuban expected a prominent role in basketball operations following Harrison's dismissal but has been completely boxed out. The sale, motivated by financial pressures of funding an NBA contender, has left Cuban disillusioned with the partnership he once believed would combine his basketball expertise with the families' financial might and real estate ambitions for a new Dallas arena.
