Judge Denies Rozier Bail Modification, NBA Return in Doubt

U.S. District Judge La Shann De Arcy Hall on Wednesday denied Terry Rozier's request to modify bail conditions that bar contact with potential witnesses and restrict international travel, dealing a significant blow to the free-agent guard's hopes of returning to the NBA this season. The judge cited Rozier's own violation of his $3 million bond — he texted a person on the no-contact list to inform them they were on it — as evidence he "believes he knows better than the court." Rozier, 32, has pleaded not guilty to bribery and conspiracy charges stemming from an alleged $70,000 payoff to help gamblers cash in on a tip that he would exit a March 2023 game early with a lower leg injury.

Prosecutors say Rozier's friend Deniro "Niro" Laster shared or sold that information, prompting more than $250,000 in bets on his statistical unders. An arbitrator ruled in February that the Heat owed Rozier his $26.6 million salary for last season after releasing him in April, but he remains unsigned. His trial is scheduled for February.

The bail conditions currently prohibit contact with at least a dozen potential witnesses, including seven former Hornets teammates now scattered across four teams. New defense attorney David Markus proposed a lawyer monitor on-court interactions, but De Arcy Hall dismissed that as unworkable. She also deferred ruling on travel to Canada for Raptors games until Rozier signs a contract, noting another defendant was recently denied permission to play basketball in Greece.

Rozier averaged 3.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.5 assists over 10 NBA seasons, but his statistical profile and age already made him a marginal roster candidate. The bail restrictions — and the judge's unwillingness to ease them preemptively — effectively freeze him out of training camps and preseason evaluations. Unless a team is willing to sign him sight-unseen and wait for a February trial resolution, his NBA career is likely over.
