Attorneys for NBA player Terry Rozier and federal prosecutors are engaged in a legal battle over the meaning of a text message in Rozier's gambling case.

Rozier's attorney, David Markus, argues that a text from co-conspirator Deniro Laster, stating "Don't tell chum bout the bet," indicates Rozier was unaware of the alleged betting scheme, as "Chum" is Rozier's nickname. Markus contends this text, provided in discovery, should lead to the dismissal of charges, as one "does not hide a bet from the person who supposedly sold it."

Prosecutors counter that evidence from "multiple sources" suggests the text chain is unrelated to sports gambling. Markus responded by asserting the government has produced co-conspirator statements confirming Rozier's ignorance of the bets prior to the game. Rozier faces charges related to manipulating his performance in a March 23, 2023, game for gamblers and has pleaded not guilty. His legal team is seeking to dismiss additional bribery charges and move the trial from New York to Florida, where Rozier resides. Rozier's trial is currently set for February 8, 2027.
