Trey Mancini Returns to MLB with Angels After Cancer Battle

Los Angeles Angels first baseman Trey Mancini stepped into the lineup Monday night against Houston, marking his first major league appearance since 2023. The 34-year-old made his comeback after the Angels selected his contract from Triple-A Salt Lake, where he posted a .273 average with six homers and 29 RBIs this season.

Mancini's return carries significant weight given his journey back from colon cancer surgery that cost him the 2020 season. A former Baltimore Oriole who slugged 29 homers in 2019, he captured a World Series ring with Houston in 2022 before bouncing around minor league systems with Chicago, Cincinnati, Miami and Arizona. His opt-out from Arizona last July came after a strong .308 showing with 16 homers at Triple-A Reno.

The Angels made this move to address injuries to Vaughn Grissom (left oblique strain) and Adam Frazier (right elbow inflammation), both placed on the 10-day injured list. Mancini's veteran presence at first base provides immediate depth while the club also recalled infielder Denzer Guzman and shifted Yoán Moncada to the 60-day IL.

For Mancini, this represents more than just another opportunity—it's a testament to his perseverance through one of baseball's most challenging personal battles, giving fans a feel-good story during what's been a difficult season for Los Angeles.
