Kike Hernandez finally returned to the Dodgers lineup after 53 games on the injured list, delivering an RBI double and helping Los Angeles beat the Colorado Rockies 5-3 on Monday. Batting ninth and starting at third in place of injured Max Muncy, Hernandez went 2 for 2 and was lifted for a pinch hitter in the seventh as the Dodgers rallied with four runs for their 18th comeback win.

The 34-year-old utility man missed the first 53 games recovering from offseason elbow surgery to repair a torn muscle and extensor tendon. Manager Dave Roberts praised Hernandez for managing his emotions well on return. He signed a $4.5 million one-year deal in February and will see time at second and third base with pinch-hitting duties. To clear a roster spot, Santiago Espinal was designated for assignment after hitting .220 in 26 games.

Hernandez played 12 rehab games with Triple-A Oklahoma City, batting .214 with two doubles. After a World Series run where he gritted through a detached tendon, he chose corrective surgery over rehab. His return gives the Dodgers a proven postseason performer as they chase a third consecutive title.
