Texas Rangers designated former NL MVP outfielder Andrew McCutchen for assignment Wednesday, ending his 37‑game stint in which he batted .192. The 39‑year‑old started 16 games—nine as designated hitter and six in the outfield—and appeared as a pinch hitter 21 times, the most of any player this season overall. He finished with two doubles, one home run and five RBIs.

To replace McCutchen, Rangers promoted infielder Nicky Lopez to a major‑league contract. Lopez, 31, has appeared in 693 games over eight seasons with five clubs and was designated for assignment by the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. His left‑handed bat offers depth at second base, and his veteran experience aligns with Texas’ push for a more reliable lineup as the season wanes.

McCutchen’s career .271 average, 333 homers and 1,157 RBIs across 2,299 games include a 2013 NL MVP award and five consecutive All‑Star selections with Pittsburgh. With seven days to trade, release or outright him, Texas must clear a roster spot for a player who can produce more consistently at the plate, tightening the squad for the overall final stretch.
