The Pittsburgh Pirates have released designated hitter Marcell Ozuna, a source confirmed to ESPN. Ozuna, who signed a one-year, $12 million deal with a mutual option for 2027, struggled offensively this season, hitting just .203 with eight home runs and 29 RBIs in 70 games.

The Pirates are expected to call up utility man Ronny Simon to the active roster. Simon has been a standout in Triple-A, leading the International League with a .330 batting average and contributing seven home runs, 63 RBIs, and 33 stolen bases.

Ozuna, 35, never seemed to find his footing at PNC Park, where he has historically struggled. His performance this year was a significant drop from his previous seasons, including his time with the Atlanta Braves where he hit 21 homers in 2025. Despite his recent struggles, Ozuna has a decorated career, including three All-Star appearances and multiple Silver Slugger awards.
