The San Diego Padres reinstated veteran infielder Jake Cronenworth from the 7-day injured list on Monday, ending his month-long absence following a concussion sustained when Angels left-hander Yusei Kikuchi's 96 mph fastball grazed his jaw on April 18. Cronenworth started at second base and batted ninth in the series opener against the Chicago Cubs, marking his first major league appearance since May 4.

Before landing on the injured list, Cronenworth struggled mightily, going just 4-for-31 over his final 12 games while dealing with delayed concussion symptoms. He showed improvement during his rehab assignment with Triple-A El Paso, going 3-for-12 with a home run in three games. Manager Craig Stammen praised Cronenworth's return, calling him a "Steady Eddie" who provides professional at-bats and solid defense at second base.

San Diego made several corresponding moves to accommodate Cronenworth's activation. Right-hander David Morgan landed on the 15-day injured list with left knee inflammation, while the Padres recalled right-hander Bradgley Rodriguez from Double-A San Antonio. Infielder Will Wagner was optioned to Triple-A El Paso to make room on the roster.

Rodriguez, 22, has posted a 2.10 ERA over 31 games with the Padres this season, going 1-2 in his rookie campaign. Stammen explained Rodriguez's recent demotion was purely for workload management, giving the youngster a week off to help navigate the grind of a long season. Cronenworth's return strengthens the Padres' infield depth as they push toward the playoffs.
