Padres Move Freddy Fermin to IL After Head Injury

San Diego Padres catcher Freddy Fermin is now on the 7-day concussion injured list after a warmup pitch hit him in the head. Reliever Yuki Matsui bounced the throw into the dirt during a game against the Baltimore Orioles. Manager Craig Stammen noted Fermin felt woozy and had suffered multiple head shots earlier this season.

To fill the void, San Diego selected the contract of Blake Hunt from Triple-A El Paso. This roster move forced the team to designate pitcher Ty Adcock for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. Rodolfo Duran took over catching duties for the series finale at Camden Yards on Sunday.

Saturday proved dangerous for the Padres, as shortstop Xander Bogaerts also took a 93.5 mph sinker to the helmet from Trey Gibson. Bogaerts stayed in the game until the sixth inning of the 9-3 victory. While Bogaerts returned to the lineup Sunday, Fermin's repeated injuries forced the medical staff's hand. San Diego lost a starting catcher during a 9-3 win.
