The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired eight-time All-Star Nolan Arenado from the St. Louis Cardinals, adding a veteran presence to their infield. The rebuilding Cardinals are sending cash to cover much of his remaining salary, making this a low-risk move for a D-backs team looking to return to the playoffs.

Arenado, who turns 35 this spring, waived his no-trade clause to join Arizona. He is motivated by postseason success, an area where his individual performance has lagged despite a Hall of Fame-caliber career. He replaces Eugenio Suarez, whom the D-backs dealt last summer, providing superior defense and potential power.

While his offensive numbers dipped last season, Arenado believes he can rebound in a lineup featuring Corbin Carroll and Ketel Marte. Arizona GM Mike Hazen prioritized his winning mentality. For the D-backs, this gamble aims to recapture the magic of their 2023 World Series run after a disappointing 80-82 campaign.
