Chicago White Sox first baseman Munetaka Murakami will miss four to six weeks after a Grade 2 right hamstring strain was confirmed by imaging. Manager Will Venable said the injury occurred in the third inning of Friday’s 4‑3 win over Detroit when Murakami beat out a double play and grabbed his thigh. Venable called the loss “tough” and noted Murakami’s impact on and off the field.

The 26‑year‑old entered the day tied for the AL lead with 20 home runs. He is batting .240 with four doubles, 41 RBI, 44 walks and a .938 OPS over 57 games in his rookie season. Chicago signed the Japanese star to a two‑year, $34 million deal in December, a contract that has helped the club climb to 30‑27, three games over .500 for the first time since 2022.

To fill the roster hole, the Sox promoted top prospect Jacob Gonzalez from Triple‑A Charlotte, where he is hitting .317 with 19 homers and a 1.087 OPS. The move coincided with right‑hander Jordan Leasure’s shift to the 60‑day injured list for forearm flexor inflammation. Murakami’s absence forces Chicago to rely on depth as it chases a playoff berth.
