Munetaka Murakami made an impressive debut for the Chicago White Sox on Friday, collecting two hits and two RBIs in their 8-1 Cactus League victory over the Cubs. The Japanese slugger, who signed a $34 million, two-year contract with the rebuilding White Sox in December, overcame a late arrival to the ballpark due to traffic.

Murakami, 26, was momentarily removed from the starting lineup after getting caught in a highway accident but arrived about 20 minutes before first pitch. He collected his first hit on a 91.9 mph sinker from Connor Schultz in the third inning, with a 108.3 mph exit velocity. In the fourth inning, he hit a two-run double when Cubs center fielder Seiya Suzuki lost the ball in the sun.

The White Sox are hoping Murakami provides a lift after dropping 324 games over the previous three seasons. Manager Will Venable praised the Japanese star's professionalism and adaptability despite the unusual circumstances surrounding his debut.
