MLBPA pushes for total ban on player prop bets

The MLBPA tabled a request to bar all prop wagers on individual athletes during collective‑ bargaining talks. The proposal would outlaw bets placed before or in‑game on metrics such as home‑run odds or strikeout totals. The union says eliminating these bets will curb harassment and protect players’ mental health.

In exchange, the MLBPA asked MLB to clarify that players may still accept endorsement deals from legal betting firms, including prediction markets. It also seeks a joint lobbying effort to push sportsbooks and daily‑fantasy platforms to eliminate player‑specific contracts. The union proposes treating betting investigations like domestic‑violence probes, placing implicated players on administrative leave.

MLB already capped first‑pitch prop bets at $250 after a 2025 scandal involving two Cleveland pitchers, and barred those wagers from parlays. The new ban would expand that restriction to all prop betting on players, which represent 20‑30% of wager volume. If accepted, the rule would reshape gambling revenue streams and tighten player protections.

MLB officials will review the proposal at the bargaining table and decide whether to adopt the joint lobbying strategy. A decision could reshape the sport’s relationship with the betting industry.
