MLB Expansion Candidates: Salt Lake City Leads West Bid

Major League Baseball expansion moved closer to reality after the Tampa Bay Rays secured $796 million in public funding for a new ballpark, removing a key obstacle cited by Commissioner Rob Manfred. With the Oakland A's relocation to Las Vegas advancing, MLB is expected to open its expansion process once a new collective bargaining agreement is reached. Manfred aims to select two expansion cities — one West Coast, one East Coast — before his planned retirement in January 2029.

Five U.S. cities have emerged as leading candidates. Salt Lake City leads the West Coast bid with all three critical elements in place: a strong ownership group led by the Larry H. Miller Company, $900 million in state stadium funding plus a $3.5 billion private development pledge, and a confirmed site at The Power District. The Miller family's experience owning the Utah Jazz adds credibility.

Nashville, long considered the East Coast front-runner, currently lacks a confirmed ownership group, stadium funding, and site, raising doubts among current MLB owners about its readiness. Other contenders are evaluating bids, with expansion fees expected to exceed $2.5 billion following recent franchise sales like the Los Angeles Angels ($4 billion) and San Diego Padres ($3.9 billion). New teams likely wouldn't debut until 2032.
