NBA Approves Seattle, Vegas Expansion Teams

The NBA is moving toward expansion as the Board of Governors prepares to vote on adding Seattle and Las Vegas franchises beginning with the 2028-29 season. Commissioner Adam Silver has signaled this decision for months, with the economic incentives proving too significant for owners to ignore. Expansion fees could reach between $7-10 billion, potentially delivering $500 million to each of the 30 existing owners.

Seattle would reclaim its SuperSonics identity and history 20 years after the team's controversial move to Oklahoma City. The return became possible after Climate Pledge Arena opened in 2021. Meanwhile, Las Vegas has already become the league's unofficial 31st city, hosting the Summer League and NBA Cup. These additions would force conference realignment, with the Minnesota Timberwolves likely shifting to the East to balance the 17-15 split.

The expansion represents a massive financial windfall for existing owners who would see their share of league revenue slightly decrease but receive substantial expansion fees. Players would benefit from additional roster spots, though they have no say in the expansion decision. The league would need to adjust playoff formats to accommodate 32 teams, potentially expanding the draft lottery to include six teams rather than five.
