Marlins lose top prospect Snelling to UCL sprain, Fairbanks returns

Miami placed prospect Robby Snelling on the 15‑day injured list Wednesday after he felt left‑elbow discomfort in a bullpen session. Tests confirmed a UCL sprain, ending his major‑league debut run after five innings against Washington. Manager Clayton McCullough lamented the setback, noting the young pitcher’s disappointment.

Snelling, the club’s No. 2 prospect acquired from San Diego in July 2024 for reliever Tanner Scott, threw five solid innings on May 8 but took the loss to the Nationals. He had been slated to start Thursday’s finale versus the Twins at Target Field before the injury forced a roster shuffle.

To fill Snelling’s spot, the Marlins activated veteran closer Pete Fairbanks from the same 15‑day IL. Fairbanks missed action since April 27 due to right‑hand nerve irritation, and his return restores a proven late‑inning option for a staff that has struggled to protect leads this season.

Right‑hander Braxton Garrett received the call‑up, joining the Minnesota road trip and expected to start Thursday. Garrett’s promotion gives Miami a fresh arm while the bullpen adjusts to Fairbanks’ presence. The moves underscore the club’s thin rotation depth and raise questions about how the staff will cope with the upcoming schedule.
