Marlins lose top prospect Snelling to season‑ending surgery

Miami’s top pitching prospect Robby Snelling will miss the rest of the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his left elbow. The 22‑year‑old made his major‑league debut on May 8, delivering five innings in a 5‑4 loss to Washington before feeling elbow pain in a bullpen session. A UCL sprain landed him on the 60‑day injured list.

Manager Clayton McCullough called the setback “disappointing,” noting the organization must now fill the fifth rotation spot. He cited optioned Braxton Garrett and reliever Tyler Phillips, who has logged 30 relief innings with 27 strikeouts, as fill‑ins. Phillips' 4 earned runs allowed this season raise concerns about his consistency. The Marlins also recalled infielder Graham Pauley while placing Leo Jimenez on a seven‑day concussion list.

Snelling, acquired from San Diego in July 2024 for reliever Tanner Scott, was the club’s No. 2 prospect on the MLB Pipeline list. His absence creates a window for Jacksonville Triple‑A arms to earn major‑league reps. The Marlins also swapped minor‑league pitcher Zach McCambley for outfielder Rece Hinds, signaling continued roster churn as they chase a playoff berth.
