Baltimore Orioles second baseman Jackson Holliday will undergo surgery Thursday to repair a broken hamate bone in his right hand, forcing him to miss Opening Day, general manager Mike Elias announced Wednesday. The injury occurred last week during batting practice, and Holliday will begin the season on the injured list.

Elias described it as "a pretty common baseball injury" that affects hitters frequently, adding that while not concerning long-term, Holliday won't be ready for the season opener. The 2022 No. 1 overall draft pick batted .242 with 17 home runs and 55 RBIs in 149 games last season after breaking into the Orioles' lineup in 2024, playing 60 games.

Meanwhile, third baseman Jordan Westburg is dealing with a right oblique injury that will delay his availability for spring training games, though Elias expects him to be ready for the regular season. "He's turned the corner and he's in the process of getting fully better," Elias told reporters. The Orioles face an early challenge with Holliday's absence as they prepare for their season opener.
