Orioles lose All-Star Jordan Westburg to Tommy John surgery

Baltimore’s promising infielder Jordan Westburg underwent Tommy John surgery on Wednesday, ending any chance of a 2026 campaign. General manager Mike Elias confirmed the procedure was routine but will sideline Westburg for the remainder of the year. The 27‑year‑old’s elbow injury stemmed from a partial ulnar collateral ligament tear diagnosed earlier this season.

Westburg, a 2024 All‑Star, managed just 85 games last year after battling a left hamstring strain, a broken left index finger and a right ankle issue. He posted a .265 average with 17 homers and 41 RBIs before the elbow setback. A platelet‑rich plasma injection in February failed to spark a return, prompting surgery.

Elias said Westburg consulted Dodgers physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache before electing the operation, which the surgeon performed. While a 2027 comeback remains plausible, the team now lacks a versatile middle‑infield option as it battles for postseason positioning. Orioles’ depth will be tested, and Westburg’s rehab will shape roster moves this summer.

With Westburg out, the Orioles are likely to shuffle utility man Ryan O'Hearn into a regular spot and explore trade options for a backup shortstop. Manager Brandon Hyde will rely on younger prospects to fill the void while preserving the club’s long‑term flexibility through the season.
