Gerrit Cole returned from a 569-day absence due to elbow ligament reconstruction, pitching six shutout innings as the Yankees defeated Tampa Bay 1-0. The 35-year-old right-hander allowed just two hits and three walks while striking out two batters.

Cole's performance marked a significant milestone after undergoing surgery in March 2025. He threw 50 of 72 pitches for strikes and averaged 96.1 mph with his fastball, reaching 98.6 mph in the first inning. The 2023 AL Cy Young Award winner showed remarkable sharpness for someone coming off such a lengthy layoff.

His last major league appearance came in Game 5 of the 2024 World Series when the Dodgers overcame a 5-0 deficit. Cole retired 10 straight batters at one point and mixed in four-seam fastballs, sinkers, sliders, changeups, and knuckle-curves effectively.

Austin Wells provided the game's only run with a fifth-inning homer. Cole's return strengthens New York's rotation as they look to build momentum in the AL East race.
