Mets Cut Veteran Reliever Craig Kimbrel After 14 Games

Craig Kimbrel was designated for assignment by the New York Mets Friday, cutting short a 14‑game spell that saw him surrender 10 runs in 15 innings. The veteran reliever appeared in the final 2 ⅔ innings of an 8‑4 loss to Washington, giving up a two‑run homer to Jacob Young.

Manager Carlos Mendoza called the decision a “super tough” move, noting Kimbrel’s professionalism even though the pitcher struggled in five of his six appearances outside of a stretch of nine scoreless outings. The 37‑year‑old, who has 440 saves across 17 seasons, now sits on waivers for a possible return.

Kimbrel’s tenure with the Mets marked his 10th MLB stop since signing as a free agent in January. After the move, the club recalled right‑hander Jonah Tong from Triple‑A Syracuse, signaling a shift toward younger arms as the Mets look to stabilize their bullpen for the remainder of the season.

With nine teams already lining up to claim him, Kimbrel faces a quick decision on his next assignment. Should no club add him to its roster, the Mets could reopen the deal, giving the veteran a second chance in New York. The outcome will shape bullpen options heading into the playoffs.
