Mets Activate Kimbrel, Adjust Bullpen Roles After Roster Move

The New York Mets activated nine-time All-Star reliever Craig Kimbrel on Saturday, making room by designating lefty Richard Lovelady for assignment. Kimbrel, 37, signed a minor league contract in January that guaranteed him $2.5 million upon reaching the active roster. He remained committed to the organization despite not breaking camp with the big-league club in April.

Kimbrel spent time in Port St. Lucie working on his mechanics, even tossing a perfect inning touching 94.2 mph in a single Low-A appearance. Manager Carlos Mendoza praised Kimbrel's dedication to improving while waiting for his shot, acknowledging the reliever's Hall of Fame trajectory. Though fifth all-time in saves, Kimbrel will not immediately step in as closer, given Devin Williams holds that role.

Mendoza confirmed Kimbrel is ready for high-leverage spots, emphasizing his extensive experience should ease the transition into a setup role. Separately, the team monitors Clay Holmes, who is trending toward his next start after exiting Friday with hamstring tightness. If Holmes falters, Sean Manaea stands ready as the primary rotation insurance policy.

This immediate roster adjustment signals the Mets are seeking veteran reliability in their bullpen now rather than later. Kimbrel’s ability to handle pressure situations, even outside the traditional closer slot, provides Mendoza with flexibility for the middle innings. The decision reflects a belief that the veteran still possesses the velocity and command required for effective major league pitching.
