The Chicago Cubs have agreed to a six-year contract extension with second baseman Nico Hoerner, sources told ESPN. The deal, pending a physical, keeps the 28-year-old infielder in Chicago through at least 2031.

Hoerner led all second basemen in fWAR last season with a career-high 4.8 mark. He hit .297 with seven home runs, 29 steals, and 61 RBIs while posting a .371 average with runners in scoring position. His stellar defense earned him a Gold Glove, and he finished 19th in NL MVP voting after hitting .419 in the postseason.

Drafted 24th overall in 2018, Hoerner had previously signed a three-year, $35 million extension before the 2024 season. His game has improved each year, culminating in a strong 2025 campaign where his strikeout rate dropped to a career-low 7.6%. Manager Craig Counsell believes Hoerner hasn't reached his ceiling yet, suggesting more power potential remains untapped.
