Brody Bumila, the Texas Rangers' 18-year-old third-round draft pick, will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair his ulnar collateral ligament. The 6-foot-9 pitcher, who can throw his fastball over 100 mph, was selected with the 89th pick in this year's draft. He had previously undergone internal-brace surgery for the same ligament in 2025. Bumila's surgery means he likely won't return until late 2027 at the earliest.

Despite the injury, Bumila was expected to be a first-round selection after a stellar high school career, posting a 1.10 ERA with 106 strikeouts in 44⅓ innings. He had committed to the University of Texas but pursued a professional career, stating, "Every kid's dream is to be a professional baseball player." The Rangers signed Bumila to a $2.75 million deal, alongside their other top draft picks, Gio Rojas and Connor Comeau.
