San Francisco Giants left-hander Carson Whisenhunt suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow, as revealed by an MRI on Tuesday, and is likely to need surgery. The injury occurred a day after he exited in the third inning of the Giants' 5-0 win against Cincinnati with elbow pain, which he said came on the final two pitches he threw and felt unlike anything he had experienced before. Whisenhunt had stated he felt great after the game, calling it the best he had felt all year, before the sudden onset of pain.

He was placed on the 15-day injured list with a sprained elbow, and the Giants recalled right-hander Spencer Bivens from Triple-A Sacramento. Whisenhunt, a 25-year-old second-round pick by San Francisco in the 2022 amateur draft from East Carolina University, was 3-4 with a 6.49 ERA and 26 strikeouts over 34⅔ innings in eight starts prior to the injury. The Giants' pitching staff has been significantly impacted by injuries, with Hayden Birdsong and Trevor Mc Donald already having undergone Tommy John reconstructive surgery.

Athletic trainer Dave Groeschner rushed to check on Whisenhunt, who was visibly in pain and held his arm straight before walking off the mound.
