The Atlanta Braves have signed former Texas Rangers All-Star catcher Jonah Heim to a one-year contract, adding depth behind the plate while Sean Murphy recovers from hip surgery. Heim, 30, joined the team for the first workout with pitchers and catchers at the Braves' spring training facility in North Port, Florida.

Heim brings an impressive resume, having been an All-Star and Gold Glove winner in 2023 when he hit .258 with 18 home runs and 95 RBI for Texas. His production dipped in recent seasons, batting .220 in 2024 and .213 last year. The Braves expect 2025 NL Rookie of the Year Drake Baldwin to handle most catching duties to start the season, with Heim providing veteran backup and potentially serving as designated hitter when not behind the plate.

Murphy, who underwent season-ending surgery in September to repair a labral tear in his right hip, began running on Tuesday and reported no setbacks in his recovery. The Braves' catching depth moves come as the team prepares for the upcoming season, with infielder Nacho Alvarez also working with catchers during the first workout.
