Braves lose Sean Murphy to fractured finger, add Sandy León

The Atlanta Braves placed catcher Sean Murphy on the 10-day injured list Tuesday after a fracture to his left middle finger. The injury occurred when Dodgers second baseman Hyeseong Kim’s swing struck Murphy’s glove in the seventh inning of Sunday’s game. Manager Walt Weiss projected an absence of up to eight weeks, sidelining the 28‑year‑old for a significant stretch.

To fill the void, Atlanta signed free‑agent catcher Sandy León on a minor‑league deal. The 37‑year‑old had been working in the Mexican League before rejoining the Braves, where he logged five games last season – his only MLB action since 2023. León’s experience offers a stop‑gap while rookie Drake Baldwin continues to handle the bulk of catching duties. León will wear number 22 and split time.

Baldwin, now entrenched as the everyday catcher, boasts an .892 OPS and ten homers, keeping his bat in the lineup when the team rotates the position. The Braves also recalled outfielder José Azócar from Triple‑A Gwinnett, designating infielder Jim Jarvis for assignment, a move that tightens depth as Atlanta chases a playoff berth in the competitive NL East.
