Braves add catcher Austin Wynns for depth

Atlanta added veteran catcher Austin Wynns on Thursday after the Braves purchased him from the Los Angeles Angels for cash. The move filled a hole created when catcher Chadwick Tromp was designated for assignment. Wynns, 35, joins the major‑league roster immediately, giving manager Walt Weiss another right‑hand option behind the plate. The veteran brings a left‑handed bat and game‑calling experience.

Injuries have forced Weiss to reshuffle his catching corps. Rookie of the Year nominee Drake Baldwin entered the 10‑day IL on May 19 with a strained right oblique and is expected back in June. Sean Murphy, sidelined by a fractured left middle finger, moved to the 60‑day IL, likely missing eight weeks. The club also promoted outfielder DaShawn Keirsey Jr. and optioned him to Triple‑A Gwinnett.

Wynns appeared in 14 games with Oakland this season, hitting .077 (3‑for‑39) before the Athletics released him May 12. He signed a minor‑league deal with the Angels four days later. Over 292 career games, Wynns posted a .231 average with 19 homers and 84 RBIs for six clubs. His addition gives Atlanta a seasoned backup as the roster stabilizes amid lingering injuries.
