Astros' Hader Injury: Season-Opening IL Placement

Houston Astros closer Josh Hader will begin the 2026 season on the injured list due to biceps inflammation, manager Joe Espada announced Wednesday. The 32-year-old left-hander threw his first bullpen session of spring training Tuesday and reported feeling good, though he'll need several more throwing sessions before facing live hitters.

Hader has been managing the biceps issue throughout spring training, throwing his first bullpen session this week. The former All-Star, who turns 32 in April, missed the end of last season with a shoulder capsule strain. In 2025, he posted a 2.05 ERA with 28 saves in 48 appearances for the Astros.

With Hader sidelined, Bryan Abreu is expected to serve as the team's closer until the left-hander returns. Abreu, who recorded seven saves last season, will step into the high-leverage role. The Astros open their regular season in less than three weeks, leaving limited time for Hader to ramp up his workload.
