Angels lose Kochanowicz to Tommy John, Moncada headed for knee surgery

Los Angeles Angels confirmed right‑hander Jack Kochanowicz will undergo Tommy John surgery after an MRI revealed a torn ulnar collateral ligament. The 25‑year‑old went 2‑5 with a 6.19 ERA in 13 starts, including a disastrous outing against the Dodgers where he surrendered seven runs in less than one inning. He is projected to miss the remainder of 2026 and all of 2027, and likely curtails his future contributions.

Third baseman Yoan Moncada also faced surgery, this time on a balky right knee. The switch‑hitter, who signed a one‑year $4 million contract in February, was placed on the 60‑day injured list after lingering inflammation sidelined him since May 22. In 41 games he posted a .189 average, .605 OPS, three homers and 10 RBI, struggling from the right side, making his absence felt in the lineup.

Angels manager Kurt Suzuki said the club is evaluating rotation options, with left‑hander Sam Aldegheri and Triple‑A arms Caden Dana and George Klassen in the mix. At third base, Denzer Guzman earned a recall to fill Moncada’s vacancy. Losing two everyday players deepens the Angels’ rebuilding woes and forces the front office to accelerate talent development, while the team hopes to stay competitive.
