Mead, an Australia native and former top-30 prospect, provides a right-handed, pull-friendly bat suited for Fenway Park. He has played first, second, third and DH this season, giving Boston flexibility. The Red Sox, buoyed by strong starts from Sonny Gray, Jake Bennett and a lockdown bullpen led by Aroldis Chapman and Garrett Whitlock, have thrived without Early since June 30.

With the Aug. 3 trade deadline looming, both teams may continue dealing. Washington is expected to listen on All-Star lefty Foster Griffin, while Boston remains in the market for another bat.
