The Washington Nationals acquired utility player Curtis Mead from the Chicago White Sox on Saturday in exchange for catcher Boston Smith. The 25-year-old Mead batted .233 with three home runs, 10 doubles, and 19 RBIs in 90 games last season for Tampa Bay and Chicago. He was designated for assignment by the White Sox earlier this week.

Mead, signed by Philadelphia as an international free agent in 2018, has hit .238 with five homers and 31 RBIs in 152 career MLB games. The Australian native batted .298 with 57 home runs and 237 RBIs in six minor league seasons. To make room on their 40-man roster, the Nationals designated left-handed pitcher Jake Eder for assignment.

The 23-year-old Smith, selected by Washington in the sixth round of the 2025 draft out of Wright State University, will report to the Arizona Complex League. He has not yet appeared in a minor-league game. The trade gives the Nationals a versatile infielder who can play multiple positions while the White Sox acquire a catching prospect to develop in their system.
